Carnelian is a translucent chalcedony or an A-grade Agate that receives its beautiful red tints from iron oxides. Most deep red Carnelian is heat treated to darken the material, this one has been sandblasted to give a matte finish. The ancient Greeks and Romans particularly valued Carnelian and believed that it could calm bad temper or still the blood.
