Scratch Test: Plated Hematite | How Good *Is* This Plating?
Posted by Erin to Articles
The virtues of plated Hematite are many. You get a pleasant heft, clean lines, and a reeeeally durable finish.

To show you all just how durable it is, we did a little experiment with some common metal and galvanized products. We wanted to see how much more durable it was than plated metals or galvanized glass.

Watch the experiment here:

As promised, you can also get a better view of the effects here:

German Wire performed quite poorly, as did the Galvanized Seed Beads- it took very little and light scraping to compromise the finish. The base metal clasp fared better. It had to be rubbed with more pressure and for a longer period of time before wear showed.

As I say in the video, I was aggressive with the Plated Hematite. Given a VERY rigorous rub with a fresh nail file for a few seconds, we got the finish scratched up. However, we didn't have the patience to try to get down to the base material. If anyone finds out how much filing it does take, shoot us an email!

When it comes to basic care and cleaning, treat plated Hematite as you would most jewelry. Don't expose it to harsh chemicals or wear it in the shower. If it needs cleaning hand soap and water is fine, as is a soft cloth.

Enjoy!
